Gush Etzion Winery

Gush Etzion Winery is situated in the heart of the Etzion Bloc, surrounded by vineyards. The scene, so typical of the areas of Bordeaux and Provence, is now typical of Gush Etzion as well. Bringing grapes to the winery, crushing them, fermenting, straining, aging – all the fascinating processes that must take place before the wine reaches the bottle and the goblet. We also operate a visitors center where our activities are no less fascinating. Since the wine is kosher lemehadrin, no contact is permitted between the visiting public and the wine-making process.

Here you are offered the choicest of our wine selection, and so your sense of taste comes into play. During the grape harvest, the winery and the winegrowers invite the wine-loving public, including children, to join in harvesting the grapes at dawn. A tour of the winery and breakfast are included.

Hiking Trails in Gush Etzion

Path of the Patriarchs (Derech Haavot)

The trail begins at the Lone Oak, the central symbol of Jewish existance in modern day Gush Etzion. From there, walk on the Path of the Patriarchs beginning at an ancient Roman millstone. Along the path, discover an ancient Mikve (ritual bath) dating back to the Second Temple Era and breathtaking views of Gush Etzion. The route concludes in Neve Daniel.

Route length: 2.5 km

Directions: Start point: The Lone Oak, the site of a three-dimensional, topegraphic model of Gush Etzion, children’s playgrounds, and an explanatory voice recording telling the story of the site.
From the oak, continue north on the path for about 200 meters, until an appearance of a dirt road that turns right to “Derech HaAvot”.

Note- This route is not circular.

The Lone Oak

Visit the Lone Oak tree, the modern day symbol of Gush Etzion.

The Lone Oalk existed as the crossroads between the original settlements of Gush Etzion, and is called the Lone Oak after the period of solitude that existed in the regions between the War of Independence and the Six Day War, in which there existed no Jewish settlements in Gush Etzion. Around the site are several large schools of Gush Etzion, a community center, the  regional council building and more, cementing the site as an epicenter of Jewish life in Gush Etzion even today.

In recent months, the site has undergone upgrades, and visitors can now enjoy a three-dimensional topographic model of Gush Etzion, childrens playgrounds, a grass lawn, and more.

Haritoun Cave

Starting point: Tekoa | End point: Tekoa
In 1969 a group of volunteers from the Jerusalem branch of the Society for the Protection of Nature, headed by Gideon Mann, set out to comprehensively map this cave. They produced an accurate and detailed map that included every traversable cavern and tunnel. It turned out that the cave is far larger and more complex than they originally assumed. Here are some statistics: The depth of the cave (in other words, the distance from the entrance to its furthest point) is some 400 meters. The combined length of the tunnels is approximately 4 kilometers. There are 55 caverns and rooms. The cave is on 4 levels, but the differences in height are not uniform. In some places there is a  difference of up to 3 meters between the first and second levels, up to 7 meters between the second and third levels, and up to 12 meters between the third and fourth levels. As previously mentioned, the aim of the volunteers was to draw a detailed and accurate map of the cave, not to study it. Now that the map exists,  we hope scientists and researchers will utilize it in order to examine its geology, the remnants of past history to be found here, the living creatures that populate it, and more.
Entrance to the cave is only permitted with experienced guides. Book a guide through the Kfar Etzion Field School: 02-9935133

Remembering the Lamed Heh: Where to Visit

“Here between Hebron, City of the Patriarchs, and Jerusalem, capital of the House of David, the Hebrew nation was cradled.” – Dov Knohl, author of Siege in the Hills of Hebron

As we approach the anniversary of the fall of the Lamed Heh, a convoy of 35 courageous fighters of Gush Etzion massacred on January 16, 1948, we honor them this coming week by telling their stories and illustrate the legacy they left behind. Heritage sites and attractions connected to the story of Gush Etzion can be found below!

Gush Etzion Heritage Center

The Gush Etzion Heritage Center tells the story of the establishment of Gush Etzion, from its early beginnings to the fall of the Gush during the War of Independence and its rebirth. The site includes a sound and light show and a memorial to the heroic defenders of Gush Etzion.

In the words of David Ben-Gurion when he declared the establishment of the State of Israel: “If Jewish Jerusalem exists… it is first and foremost due to the fighters and settlers of Gush Etzion.”

The Lone Oak Tree (Alon HaBoded)

Gush Etzion is often symbolized by the Lone Oak, a centuries-old tree in between Alon Shvut and Rosh Tzurim.

The site includes a three-dimensional topographic model of the entire Gush Etzion, playgrounds for children, and a voice recording describing the story of the tree. The ancient tree signifies Jewish resilience and existence in the region, despite destruction or terror as faced by the Lamed Heh Convoy. The total population in Gush Etzion is now over 70,000, and the Lone Oak sits alone no more.

Lamed Heh Lookout Point

The Lamed Heh Lookout Point is a great stopping point on the way to the many tourist attractions in Gush Etzion, overlooking the beautiful Elah Valley and the site of the Lamed Heh’s final battle.

The two lookout points on-site both have shaded and sitting areas, and includes a recording that tells the story of the battle and struggles faced by the Lamed Heh Convoy.

Roza Steakhouse

The Gush Etzion ancient fortress, a preserved building preceding the 20th century, is now the site of the delicious Roza steakhouse! Structures such as these previously served settlers such as the Lamed Heh (Convoy of 35), and today does the same for their dear descendants.
